PSYCHOLOGICAL CHECKUPS JUST AS VITAL AS PHYSICAL ANNUALS

BY LINE SZEGEDI JESS // UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

"Half of Americans with severe mental illness do not seek treatment. For a number of reasons, such as stigma, lack of knowledge or resources, Americans are extremely apprehensive about giving their mind the treatment and care it needs (SoRelle, 2000). On the other hand, as soon as we discover a rash on our skin, an abnormal headache or any physical concern, we are the first one in the clinic’s waiting room."

THE ROLE OF AGENCY IN MEN’S PERFORMATIVE SEXUAL STORYTELLING

BY EKIM LUO

In the scenario of a misogynistic performance such as the “locker room talk” where men reinforce their masculine identity and bonding, numerous researchers have identified such acts as detrimental to male-female relationships. Indeed, such storytelling solidifies the objectification of women, reinforces the oppression of women, yet evades adequate social scrutiny as it hides behind the seemingly valid argument that there was simply a lack of agency due to the peer pressure - that it was, in fact, “just locker room talk”.

ABOUT US

Ekim & Katrina

We met through an exchange program at the University of Cambridge. We bonded over our interest in feminist issues, particularly in research, and our love for boba. We are both psychology students. Inspired by the misinformation and lack of research-based opinions, we started this platform with the goal of sharing our opinions on various cultural and political issues, as well as educating ourselves in the process. We also aim to build an understanding of Feminist Psychology and its relation to other disciplines.

I grew up in Shanghai, China and moved between the US and Austria since I was a teenager. After leaving Schnitzel-land, I completed my BA in psychology at the University of Spoiled Children. As you can see, I don't have many recent selfies. This photo was taken during the SARS outbreak in 2003, and my mom took a trip with me because nobody was traveling then.

Hello, bonjour, مرحبا.  I'm Katrina and I'm an American-Lebanese citizen. I'm currently a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and I am a Psychology/Global Studies major with a minor in French.  Before moving to the land of corn, I lived in 5 countries in the MIddle East. Answering the question "Where are you from?" isn't a challenge for many, yet I struggle to accurately describe what should be a simple answer. After moving from country to country, I've learned to safely say that I am from nowhere and everywhere, for I know that every corner of the world holds a shard of familiarity and a sense of home.
